Winery Background and History

Weingut F.X. Pichler, located in Dürnstein, Wachau, Austria, is a family-owned estate with a winemaking heritage spanning five generations. Established in 1971 by Franz Xaver Pichler, the winery has become synonymous with high-quality Austrian white wines, particularly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Today, the estate is managed by his son, Lucas Pichler, who continues the tradition of producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Wachau region. The winery’s commitment to excellence has earned it international acclaim, positioning it among Austria’s top wine producers.

Producer and Winemaker

Lucas Pichler, the current winemaker at F.X. Pichler, combines traditional methods with modern techniques to craft wines that express the purity and character of their vineyards. Under his guidance, the estate has embraced sustainable practices, including organic farming, to enhance the quality and authenticity of their wines. Lucas’s meticulous approach ensures that each bottle reflects the distinctive minerality and elegance characteristic of the Wachau region.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Ried Burgstall vineyard is situated on a plateau above the village of Loiben in the Wachau Valley. This site is characterized by its gneiss and granite soils, which contribute to the wine’s pronounced minerality. The vineyard benefits from a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, promoting the development of aromatic complexity and balanced acidity in the grapes. The 2022 vintage experienced favorable conditions, resulting in wines with remarkable freshness and precision.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo gentle pressing to preserve their delicate aromas. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to maintain the purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is aged on fine lees for several months, enhancing its texture and complexity without the influence of oak. This approach results in a Riesling that is both vibrant and refined.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 F.X. Pichler Ried Burgstall Riesling Federspiel presents a luminous pale yellow hue. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of pink grapefruit, Amalfi lemon, and white peach. On the palate, the wine is zesty and juicy, with a medium body and a racy acidity that imparts energy and freshness. Flavors of citrus and stone fruit are complemented by a pronounced wet stone minerality, leading to a long, invigorating finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Riesling pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and mineral backbone make it an ideal companion for shellfish, such as oysters and scallops, as well as white fish preparations. The wine’s citrus notes complement dishes featuring lemon or herb-based sauces. Additionally, it harmonizes with spicy Asian cuisine, where its freshness balances the heat and complexity of flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the wine chilled at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now for its vibrant freshness but also has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years. With time, the wine will develop additional complexity, showcasing honeyed and petrol notes characteristic of aged Riesling.
