Winery Background and History

Weingut Egon Müller, situated in Wiltingen along the Saar River in Germany, is one of the most esteemed wine estates globally. Established in the late 18th century, the estate has remained under the stewardship of the Müller family for generations. The winery is renowned for its exceptional Rieslings, particularly those from the Scharzhofberg vineyard, which is considered one of the finest white wine vineyards in the world. The estate’s commitment to quality and tradition has solidified its reputation as a producer of some of the most sought-after wines.

Producer and Winemaker

Egon Müller IV, born in 1959, is the current proprietor and winemaker at Weingut Egon Müller. He represents the sixth generation of the Müller family to oversee the estate. Educated at the Geisenheim University, Egon Müller IV is renowned for his meticulous approach to winemaking, emphasizing traditional methods and a deep respect for the vineyard’s natural characteristics. Under his guidance, the estate continues to produce some of the world’s most exquisite Rieslings.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Scharzhofberg vineyard, located near Wiltingen in the Saar region, is characterized by its steep slopes and Devonian slate soils. This terroir, combined with the cool climate of the Saar Valley, provides ideal conditions for Riesling cultivation. The vineyard’s unique microclimate, with its significant diurnal temperature variations, allows for extended ripening periods, resulting in wines with remarkable acidity, complexity, and aging potential.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2022 Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese was crafted from carefully selected, late-harvested Riesling grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). Fermentation occurred in traditional large oak casks using native yeasts, a method that preserves the wine’s delicate aromatics and enhances its textural complexity. The wine was aged on its fine lees to develop depth and mouthfeel before being bottled.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 vintage exhibits a vibrant bouquet of tropical fruits, including dried mango and apricot, complemented by notes of honey blossom and marmalade. On the palate, it is rich and opulent, with a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The finish is long and complex, leaving a lingering impression of fruit and minerality.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Auslese pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its sweetness and high acidity complement spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai or Szechuan dishes. It also harmonizes well with foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts like apple pie or crème brûlée.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this Riesling chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F). Using a white wine glass will concentrate its aromatic profile. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expression.

Storage and Aging Potential

While delightful in its youth, the 2022 Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese has excellent aging potential. Stored under proper conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—it can evolve gracefully over the next 30 years, developing additional complexity and depth.
