Winery Background and History

Weingut Egon Müller, located in Wiltingen on the Saar River in Germany’s Mosel region, is a family-owned estate renowned for producing some of the world’s most esteemed Rieslings. Established in the late 18th century, the estate has been passed down through generations, with Egon Müller IV currently at the helm. The winery is particularly celebrated for its exceptional Scharzhofberg vineyard, which yields wines of remarkable elegance and longevity.

Producer and Winemaker

Egon Müller IV continues the family’s legacy, emphasizing traditional winemaking techniques that highlight the unique terroir of the Saar region. His approach focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the Riesling grape and the vineyard to shine through. Under his guidance, the estate consistently produces wines that are both expressive and age-worthy.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for the 2023 Scharzhof Riesling are sourced from multiple vineyards, including Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Volz, Braune Kupp, and marginal parcels of Scharzhofberg and Oberemmeler Rosenberg. These sites are characterized by their slate-rich soils and steep slopes, which, combined with the cool climate of the Saar, contribute to the wine’s vibrant acidity and mineral complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2023 vintage underwent spontaneous fermentation, primarily in stainless steel tanks, with approximately 20% fermented in traditional Fuder barrels. This method preserves the wine’s freshness and purity while allowing for subtle complexity. The resulting wine is a harmonious expression of its terroir, showcasing the finesse typical of Egon Müller’s Rieslings.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Scharzhof Riesling exhibits a pale straw color and a complex bouquet of citrus, stone fruit, and mineral aromas. On the palate, it is crisp and off-dry, with flavors of peach, apple, and lime, complemented by a refreshing acidity and a lingering finish. The wine’s balance and elegance make it a quintessential representation of Saar Riesling.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Riesling pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including spicy Asian cuisine, seafood, and light poultry dishes. Its off-dry character and vibrant acidity complement the heat of spicy foods, while its fruitiness enhances the flavors of delicate seafood and poultry preparations.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2023 Scharzhof Riesling chilled, at a temperature of 8–10°C (46–50°F), in white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting is not necessary. This wine is ready to drink now but will also benefit from short-term aging.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2023 Scharzhof Riesling is enjoyable in its youth, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 25 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool temperatures, consistent humidity, and minimal light exposure—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time.
