Winery Background and History

Weingut Egon Müller, located in Wiltingen in Germany’s Saar region, is a family-owned estate renowned for producing some of the world’s most esteemed Rieslings. Established in the late 18th century, the estate has been passed down through generations, with Egon Müller IV currently at the helm. The winery is particularly celebrated for its exceptional Scharzhofberg vineyard, which yields wines of remarkable elegance and longevity. In 1954, Egon Müller III expanded the estate by acquiring half of the Weingut Le Gallais, including the Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard.

Producer and Winemaker

Egon Müller IV, the sixth generation of his family to manage the estate, continues the tradition of crafting world-class Rieslings. A graduate of the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences, he emphasizes traditional winemaking techniques that highlight the unique terroir of the Saar region. Under his guidance, the estate consistently produces wines that are both expressive and age-worthy.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard, part of the Le Gallais estate, is situated on steep, south-facing slopes with slate-rich soils. These conditions, combined with the Saar’s cool climate and significant diurnal temperature variations, contribute to the development of Riesling grapes with vibrant acidity and complex aromatic profiles. Compared to the Scharzhofberg vineyard, Braune Kupp tends to produce wines that are riper and richer in profile.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This method preserves the wine’s freshness and purity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for several months on fine lees before bottling, allowing it to develop complexity and balance. The 2023 vintage showcases the meticulous attention to detail characteristic of Egon Müller’s winemaking philosophy.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese offers a captivating bouquet of ripe stone fruits, particularly peach and apricot, complemented by subtle floral aromas. On the palate, it is juicy and concentrated, yet vibrant and refined, with a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The finish is long and refreshing, with a mineral undertone that reflects the vineyard’s slate soils.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Spätlese pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including spicy Asian cuisine, seafood, and light poultry dishes. Its vibrant acidity and subtle sweetness complement the heat of spicy foods, while its fruitiness enhances the flavors of delicate seafood and poultry preparations. Additionally, the wine’s minerality makes it an excellent match for dishes featuring earthy ingredients like mushrooms or root vegetables.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve the 2023 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese chilled at a temperature of 8–10°C (46–50°F) in white wine glasses to allow the aromas to fully develop. Decanting is not necessary. This wine is ready to drink now but will also benefit from short-term aging.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2023 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese is enjoyable in its youth, it possesses the structure and acidity to age gracefully for up to 30 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool temperatures, consistent humidity, and minimal light exposure—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time.
