Winery Background and History

Weingut Egon Müller, located in Wiltingen along the Saar River in Germany, is one of the most esteemed wine estates globally. Established in the late 18th century, the estate has remained under the stewardship of the Müller family for generations. The winery is renowned for its exceptional Rieslings, particularly those from the Scharzhofberg vineyard, which is considered one of the finest white wine vineyards in the world. In 1954, Egon Müller III expanded the estate by acquiring a portion of the historic Le Gallais vineyard, which includes the renowned Wiltinger Braune Kupp site. The estate’s commitment to quality and tradition has solidified its reputation as a producer of some of the most sought-after wines.

Producer and Winemaker

Egon Müller IV, born in 1959, is the current proprietor and winemaker at Weingut Egon Müller. He represents the sixth generation of the Müller family to oversee the estate. Educated at the Geisenheim University, Egon Müller IV is renowned for his meticulous approach to winemaking, emphasizing traditional methods and a deep respect for the vineyard’s natural characteristics. Under his guidance, the estate continues to produce some of the world’s most exquisite Rieslings.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard is situated on the steep slopes overlooking the Saar River. Characterized by its brown slate soils, the site benefits from excellent drainage and heat retention, which are ideal for Riesling cultivation. The cool climate of the Saar region, combined with significant diurnal temperature variations, allows for extended ripening periods, resulting in wines with remarkable acidity and aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes for the 2020 Spätlese were hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and quality. Fermentation occurred in traditional large oak casks using native yeasts, a method that preserves the wine’s delicate aromatics and enhances its textural complexity. The wine was aged on its fine lees to develop depth and mouthfeel before being bottled.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 vintage exhibits a complex bouquet of red apple and red plum with delicate spice. On the palate, it is very ripe but retains noble discretion, with succulence married to great structure. The finish is long and creamy, with grape sweetness already beautifully integrated.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Spätlese pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its slight sweetness and high acidity complement spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai or Szechuan dishes. It also harmonizes well with seafood, particularly shellfish, and can be an excellent match for creamy cheeses or light poultry dishes.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this Riesling chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F). Using a white wine glass will concentrate its aromatic profile. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expression.

Storage and Aging Potential

While delightful in its youth, the 2020 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese has excellent aging potential. Stored under proper conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—it can evolve gracefully over the next 30 years, developing additional complexity and depth.
