Winery Background and History

Domaine Leflaive, established in 1717, is a renowned family-owned estate located in Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy, France. Over the centuries, the Leflaive family has expanded their vineyard holdings to encompass some of the most prestigious parcels in the region. The estate has been a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture since the early 1990s, emphasizing sustainable farming practices to enhance the expression of their terroirs. Today, Domaine Leflaive is celebrated for producing some of the finest white Burgundies, reflecting a profound respect for tradition and innovation.

Producer and Winemaker

The domaine is currently managed by Brice de La Morandière, a member of the fourth generation of the Leflaive family. Under his leadership, the estate continues to uphold its commitment to biodynamic principles and meticulous winemaking techniques. The winemaking team focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of each vineyard to shine through in the wines. This approach has solidified Domaine Leflaive’s reputation for crafting wines of purity, elegance, and depth.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Puligny-Montrachet vineyards are situated in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, characterized by limestone-rich soils that impart minerality to the wines. The continental climate, with warm summers and cool winters, provides ideal conditions for Chardonnay cultivation. The combination of soil composition and microclimate contributes to the distinctive finesse and complexity found in Domaine Leflaive’s Puligny-Montrachet wines.

100% Chardonnay

Vinification & Aging Methods

The winemaking process begins with hand-harvesting to ensure optimal fruit selection. Grapes undergo gentle pneumatic pressing, followed by a settling period of 24 hours. Fermentation occurs in oak casks, with approximately 18% new oak, to add subtle complexity without overpowering the fruit character. The wine is matured for 12 months in cask, followed by six months in stainless steel tanks to harmonize flavors before bottling. This meticulous approach preserves the wine’s freshness and allows the terroir to be fully expressed.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Blanc presents aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers, and hazelnuts. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a satiny texture, tangy acidity, fine concentration, and a chalky finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This elegant Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Seafood options like grilled scallops or seared salmon complement the wine’s minerality and acidity. Poultry dishes, such as roasted chicken with herbs or creamy pasta with mushrooms, enhance its rich texture and flavor profile. Soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert also harmonize well, offering a delightful contrast to the wine’s crispness.

Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine chilled at a temperature between 10°C and 12°C (50°F to 54°F). Using medium-sized white wine glasses will allow the aromas to fully express themselves. Decanting is not necessary; however, opening the bottle 15-20 minutes before serving can help the wine breathe and enhance its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Blanc has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years. When stored in optimal conditions—cool temperatures around 12°C (54°F), consistent humidity, and away from direct light—the wine can develop additional complexity, with tertiary flavors emerging over time. However, it is also approachable in its youth, offering vibrant fruit flavors and refreshing acidity.
