Winery Background and History

Domaine Jean-René Germanier is located in the hamlet of Balavaud in Vétroz, within Switzerland’s Valais canton. The estate encompasses 60 hectares in the AOC Valais, with vines averaging 40 years in age. The winery emphasizes environmentally respectful viticulture, focusing on indigenous grape varieties to express the unique microclimate of the region.

Producer and Winemaker

The estate is managed by Jean-René Germanier and his associate oenologist, Gilles Besse. They prioritize meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention winemaking to highlight the terroir’s expression in their wines.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The “Les Terrasses” vineyard is situated on the slopes of Vétroz, characterized by glacial moraine and slate soils. This terroir imparts structure, freshness, and minerality to the wine. The region benefits from abundant sunshine, cool temperatures, and protection from icy winds due to the surrounding alpine massifs.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

100% Chasselas (locally known as Fendant)

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes are manually harvested and fermented in stainless steel vats to preserve freshness. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for six months in stainless steel tanks, enhancing its texture and complexity.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

12.1%

Tasting Notes

The wine exhibits an intense pale yellow color with gray reflections. Aromas of sliced pear suggest initial sweetness, but the palate reveals a bone-dry character after a juicy first impression. Striking wet-stone and salty minerality drive the long, lemony finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Fendant pairs well with aperitifs, freshwater fish, and cheese dishes. Its minerality and freshness complement dishes like raclette, fondue, and grilled trout.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and crispness. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its freshness.

Storage and Aging Potential

While enjoyable upon release, this wine can develop additional complexity with short-term cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 2 to 3 years.
