Winery Background and History
Founded in 1720 in Meursault, Domaine Jean Monnier et Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest family-run estates. Now under the stewardship of Nicolas Monnier, a 16th-generation winemaker, the domaine spans 17 hectares across prestigious appellations including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard, and Beaune. The estate emphasizes traditional winemaking techniques, aiming to produce wines that authentically express the character of their respective vineyards.
Producer and Winemaker
Nicolas Monnier leads the winemaking at Domaine Jean Monnier et Fils, continuing the family’s legacy of crafting elegant and terroir-driven wines. The approach includes hand-harvesting, natural fermentations, and aging in French oak barrels, aiming to produce wines that authentically express the character of their respective vineyards.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The “Les Grands Épenots” vineyard is a Premier Cru site located in Pommard, within the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. Domaine Jean Monnier et Fils owns a 3.44-hectare monopole within this vineyard, known as “Clos de Cîteaux.” Situated at an elevation of 350 meters, the vineyard features a mix of limestone and clay soils, contributing to the wine’s structure and minerality.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo pneumatic crushing. Fermentation takes place in tanks over approximately 10 days, followed by maturation in Burgundian oak barrels for about 11 months. This process aims to balance the wine’s fruit character with subtle oak influences, enhancing complexity and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 vintage presents a deep red color. The nose is powerful and intense, offering aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, musk, and game meat. On the palate, these flavors persist, supported by good acidity and balance. The wine is mouth-filling and rich, culminating in a long, elegant finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This robust Pommard pairs well with bold-flavored dishes such as wild boar pâté, steak in red wine sauce, and other hearty meats. Its richness and structure also complement aged cheeses and mushroom-based dishes.
