Winery Background and History

Domaine Jean-Marc Millot is a family-owned estate nestled in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. The Millot family has cultivated vineyards for eight generations, with the Echézeaux du Dessus parcel planted in 1949 by Jean-Marc’s great-grandfather. Initially leased to Domaine Mungeard-Mugneret, the parcel was reclaimed by the Millot family, who began producing their own wines. In 2017, Jean-Marc and his daughter Alix introduced the “Cuvée 1949,” sourced exclusively from these old vines, marking a significant milestone in the domaine’s history.

Producer and Winemaker

Jean-Marc Millot, alongside his daughter Alix, manages the domaine with a focus on traditional viticultural practices. Jean-Marc has been instrumental in revitalizing the family’s vineyards, emphasizing organic farming methods and minimal intervention in the winemaking process. Alix, representing the new generation, brings a fresh perspective while honoring the family’s legacy, contributing to the domaine’s reputation for producing elegant and terroir-driven wines.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Echézeaux du Dessus vineyard is situated in the Flagey-Echézeaux commune of the Côte de Nuits. This Grand Cru site is renowned for its deep limestone and clay soils, providing excellent drainage and mineral content. The vineyard benefits from a continental climate, characterized by warm summers and cool winters, ideal for Pinot Noir cultivation. The old vines, planted in 1949, yield low quantities of highly concentrated fruit, contributing to the complexity and depth of the “Cuvée 1949.”

100% Pinot Noir

Vinification & Aging Methods

The winemaking process for the “Cuvée 1949” begins with manual harvesting to ensure optimal fruit selection. The grapes undergo a meticulous sorting process before fermentation, which utilizes indigenous yeasts to preserve the vineyard’s unique characteristics. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new oak to maintain balance and highlight the purity of the fruit. This approach results in a wine that authentically reflects its terroir.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

Specific ABV information for the 2017 vintage is not readily available; however, Burgundy Pinot Noirs typically range between 12.5% and 14%.

Tasting Notes

The 2017 “Cuvée 1949” exhibits a deep ruby color with a complex bouquet of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, intertwined with mineral undertones. On the palate, it offers remarkable finesse and elegance, with well-integrated tannins and a persistent finish. The wine’s complexity is attributed to the depth of the Echézeaux du Dessus parcel, contributing to its unique character.

Food & Wine Pairing

This elegant Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted duck breast, mushroom risotto, or coq au vin. The wine’s acidity and tannin structure complement the richness of these dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience. Additionally, soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert can harmonize with the wine’s nuanced flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help to open up its complex aromas and flavors, especially in its youth. Using large, Burgundy-style glasses will allow the wine to express its aromatic profile fully.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2017 “Cuvée 1949” has significant aging potential. When stored in optimal conditions—cool temperatures around 12°C (54°F), consistent humidity, and away from direct light—the wine can develop additional complexity over the next 10 to 15 years, rewarding those with the patience to cellar it.
