Winery Background and History

Established in 1928 by Victor Huet and his son Gaston, Domaine Huet is a benchmark estate in the Loire Valley’s Vouvray appellation. Renowned for its dedication to biodynamic viticulture since 1990, the estate spans 35 hectares across three principal vineyards: Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont, and Clos du Bourg. Domaine Huet’s commitment to expressing the unique terroir of each site has solidified its reputation for producing some of the most age-worthy and expressive Chenin Blanc wines in the world.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the ownership of Anthony Hwang since 2003, Domaine Huet continues its legacy with a team that upholds traditional winemaking practices. The estate’s approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the character of the Chenin Blanc grape and the distinctiveness of each vineyard to shine. The winemaking process is overseen by a dedicated team committed to maintaining the high standards set by the Huet family.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Le Mont vineyard, acquired by Domaine Huet in 1957, encompasses 9 hectares on the slopes of Vouvray. Characterized by its green clay and flint (silex) soils, Le Mont imparts a distinctive minerality and tension to the wines. The vineyard’s southeast exposure ensures optimal sunlight, while the Loire River’s proximity moderates temperatures, contributing to the grapes’ balanced ripening and the wine’s vibrant acidity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted meticulously to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation occurs using indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel tanks and old oak barrels, preserving the purity of the fruit. Malolactic fermentation is typically avoided to maintain the wine’s natural acidity. The wine is aged on its fine lees, enhancing texture and complexity, before being bottled without filtration.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Le Mont Sec presents a luminous pale gold hue. On the nose, it offers an intricate bouquet of green apple, quince, lime zest, and subtle floral notes of honeysuckle and chamomile. The palate is medium to full-bodied, showcasing flavors of pear, citrus peel, and a hint of flint-driven minerality. A vibrant acidity provides structure, leading to a long, precise finish with lingering notes of citrus and wet stone.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine’s crisp acidity and mineral backbone make it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. Ideal pairings include grilled seafood such as scallops or sole, poultry dishes with creamy sauces, and vegetarian fare like asparagus risotto. Soft cheeses, particularly goat cheese, also complement its flavor profile.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in white wine glasses to accentuate its aromatic complexity. While decanting is not necessary, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expressive qualities.

Storage and Aging Potential

Under proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent humidity—this wine has the potential to age gracefully for 10 to 15 years. Over time, it will develop additional layers of complexity, including notes of honey, dried fruits, and a richer texture, while maintaining its structural integrity.
