Winery Background and History

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley has established itself as one of Burgundy’s most esteemed family-owned estates. Situated in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the domaine has expanded its holdings over seven generations, encompassing approximately 120 hectares across the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Côte Chalonnaise. Known for its dedication to expressing the unique terroirs of Burgundy, Faiveley combines traditional practices with modern techniques to produce wines of exceptional quality and character.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the leadership of Erwan Faiveley, who took the helm in 2005, Domaine Faiveley has embraced a philosophy that balances tradition with innovation. Collaborating with technical director Jérôme Flous, the team emphasizes sustainable viticulture and precise winemaking to highlight the nuances of each vineyard. Their approach focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the purity and expression of the Pinot Noir grape to shine through in their wines.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The “Aux Chaignots” Premier Cru vineyard is located on the northern slopes of Nuits-Saint-Georges, adjacent to the Vosne-Romanée appellation. Domaine Faiveley’s 1.8-acre parcel lies mid-slope, featuring limestone and gravel soils that contribute to the wine’s finesse and aromatic complexity. The vineyard’s exposure and soil composition, combined with the region’s continental climate, result in grapes that produce wines with a harmonious balance of power and elegance.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 70% being new oak. This aging process imparts subtle oak nuances and allows the wine to develop its full aromatic and structural potential, enhancing its complexity and depth.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots exhibits a dark ruby red hue. The nose reveals aromas of red cherries and fresh garden herbs, complemented by roasted and smoky notes. On the palate, the wine is rich and oily with good structure, displaying a perfect balance between finesse and strength. Silky tannins provide a harmonious mouthfeel, leading to a concentrated and compact finish with impressive power and drive.

Food & Wine Pairing

This robust Pinot Noir pairs excellently with rich meat dishes such as roast duck, venison, or beef bourguignon. Its structure and depth also complement game birds and hearty stews. For cheese pairings, consider aged varieties like Gruyère or Comté. The wine’s complexity and balance make it a versatile companion to a range of flavorful dishes.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots at a temperature of 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving can help open up the wine’s bouquet and enhance its flavors. Use Burgundy-style glasses to concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage has the potential to age gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years, developing additional complexity and depth. With proper cellaring, expect the emergence of tertiary notes such as dried fruits, forest floor, and earthy nuances, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
