Winery Background and History
Established in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is a family-owned estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy. With over 125 hectares of vineyards, it stands as one of the largest vineyard owners in the region. Under the leadership of Erwan Faiveley since 2005, the domaine has embraced sustainable viticulture and modernized winemaking techniques, enhancing the quality and reputation of its wines. Faiveley’s holdings include prestigious Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.
Producer and Winemaker
Erwan Faiveley, representing the seventh generation of the Faiveley family, has been instrumental in elevating the estate’s stature. Collaborating with Technical Director Jérôme Flous, the team emphasizes precision in both vineyard management and winemaking. Their approach focuses on minimal intervention, allowing each wine to express its unique origin. The duo’s dedication to quality and innovation ensures that Domaine Faiveley’s wines consistently showcase elegance, depth, and a true sense of place.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The “En Orveaux” climat is a distinguished parcel within the Échézeaux Grand Cru appellation, situated near the renowned Musigny vineyard. Domaine Faiveley’s 0.83-hectare plot, planted in 1950, 1956, and 1985, lies on a slope with shallow soils and southern exposure. The vineyard benefits from a microclimate that combines the finesse of Chambolle-Musigny with the power of Vosne-Romanée, contributing to the wine’s complexity and elegance.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. Fermentation occurs in open vats, with a portion of whole clusters (30% in 2022) to enhance aromatic complexity. The wine undergoes a 19-day maceration, followed by aging for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. This regimen imparts structure and depth while preserving the wine’s delicate fruit profile.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Échézeaux “En Orveaux” Grand Cru exhibits a clear ruby hue. The nose reveals a deep bouquet of sour cherries, complemented by delicate spicy and earthy nuances. On the palate, the wine is ripe and expansive, yet bright and precise, showcasing great energy and a driving finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as duck breast with cherry sauce, roasted lamb, or mushroom risotto. Its complexity and structure also complement aged cheeses like Comté or Époisses.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16°C to 18°C (61°F to 64°F) in large Burgundy-style glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1 to 2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its nuanced flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 15 to 20 years, developing greater complexity and depth over time.
