Winery Background and History

Domaine du Pegau, located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France, is a family-owned estate with roots tracing back to the 17th century. The Féraud family has cultivated vines in the region for generations, but it was in 1987 that Laurence Féraud joined her father, Paul, to establish Domaine du Pegau as a benchmark producer of traditionally styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. The name “Pegau” is derived from a 14th-century wine jug discovered during excavations at the Pope’s Palace in Avignon, symbolizing the estate’s deep historical ties to the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Laurence Féraud, a passionate and skilled winemaker, leads the estate with a commitment to traditional winemaking practices. Under her guidance, Domaine du Pegau has gained international acclaim for its authentic expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. Laurence’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the character of the vineyards to shine through in each bottle.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The estate’s vineyards span 21 hectares, primarily located on the renowned La Crau plateau. The soils are composed of galets roulés (rounded stones), clay, and limestone, providing excellent drainage and heat retention, which contribute to the ripening and concentration of the grapes. The Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and the cooling Mistral winds, further enhances the quality and expression of the fruit.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2019 Cuvée Laurence is crafted from a blend identical to the estate’s Cuvée Réservée, predominantly Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The grapes are harvested manually, with no destemming, and undergo spontaneous fermentation using natural yeasts in concrete tanks. Maceration lasts approximately 12 days, followed by extended aging of over 48 months in large, old oak foudres. This prolonged maturation allows for the development of complex flavors and aromas, resulting in a wine of exceptional depth and character.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 vintage presents a deep ruby color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of crème de cassis, exotic spices, tobacco, and leather. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, showcasing flavors of red and black fruits, herbes de Provence, licorice, and saddle leather. The wine’s structure is marked by fine, compact tannins and a long, lingering finish, reflecting its extended aging and concentration.

Food & Wine Pairing

This robust red pairs excellently with hearty dishes such as grilled or roasted meats, game, and strong cheeses. Its complex flavor profile complements dishes like lamb stew, beef bourguignon, and aged Gouda or Roquefort cheeses. The wine’s structure and depth also make it a suitable companion for Mediterranean cuisine featuring herbs and spices.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve the wine at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for one to two hours prior to serving can enhance its aromatic complexity and allow the wine to open up gracefully. Using appropriate glassware, such as a large red wine glass, will also help to showcase the wine’s aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

While enjoyable now, the 2019 Cuvée Laurence possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully for 15–20 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time.
