Winery Background and History

Domaine du Pegau, situated in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France, is a family-owned estate with roots tracing back to the 17th century. The Féraud family has cultivated vines in the region for generations, but it was in 1987 that Laurence Féraud joined her father, Paul, to establish Domaine du Pegau as a benchmark producer of traditionally styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. The name “Pegau” is derived from a 14th-century wine jug discovered during excavations at the Pope’s Palace in Avignon, symbolizing the estate’s deep historical ties to the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Laurence Féraud, a passionate and skilled winemaker, leads the estate with a commitment to traditional winemaking practices. Under her guidance, Domaine du Pegau has gained international acclaim for its authentic expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. Laurence’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the character of the vineyards to shine through in each bottle.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The estate’s vineyards span 21 hectares, with 1.5 hectares dedicated to white grape varieties. Located on the renowned La Crau plateau, the vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and the cooling Mistral winds. The soils are composed of galets roulés (rounded stones), clay, and limestone, providing excellent drainage and heat retention, which contribute to the ripening and concentration of the grapes.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2023 Cuvée Réservée Blanc is crafted from a blend of 60% Clairette, 20% Grenache Blanc, 10% Roussanne, and 10% Bourboulenc. The grapes, averaging 25 years in age, are harvested and pressed whole. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. The wine undergoes no malolactic fermentation, maintaining its vibrant acidity, and is bottled young to capture its lively character.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 vintage presents a pale golden hue with bright reflections. On the nose, it offers aromas of white flowers, jasmine, and peach, complemented by citrus notes. The palate is clean, crisp, and fresh, showcasing flavors of peach, apple, and nectarine, with a touch of minerality. The wine’s lively acidity and balanced structure lead to a refreshing and lingering finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This white Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs excellently with savory cheeses and seafood dishes, particularly bouillabaisse. Its crisp acidity and aromatic complexity complement dishes such as grilled fish, shellfish, and poultry, as well as Mediterranean cuisine featuring herbs and olive oil.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve the wine chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F). Using a white wine glass will enhance its aromatic profile. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can further develop its bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2023 Cuvée Réservée Blanc is delightful in its youth, it possesses the structure to age gracefully for 5–7 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity, with notes of honey and dried fruits emerging over time.
