Winery Background and History

Domaine de l’Oubliée, established in 2009 by winemaker Xavier Courant, is located in the commune of Saint-Patrice within the Loire Valley’s Bourgueil appellation. Prior to founding the estate, Courant was a Parisian caviste who transitioned into winemaking after studying viticulture and oenology, and gaining experience under renowned vigneron Romain Guiberteau. The estate spans 7.14 hectares, primarily cultivating Cabernet Franc, with a small parcel dedicated to Chenin Blanc. The name “Notre Histoire” translates to “Our Story,” reflecting Courant’s personal journey and passion for winemaking. Interestingly, each of his wines is named after a film by French director Bertrand Blier, highlighting Courant’s admiration for the filmmaker.

Producer and Winemaker

As both proprietor and winemaker, Xavier Courant is dedicated to organic farming practices, achieving organic certification for the estate. His approach in the cellar emphasizes minimal intervention, utilizing native yeasts for fermentation and avoiding fining or filtration. Sulfur additions are kept to a minimum, only applied in low doses at bottling. Courant’s philosophy centers on producing wines that authentically express the terroir of Bourgueil, capturing the essence of the vineyard’s unique soils and microclimate.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The “Notre Histoire” cuvée is sourced from vineyards planted on calcareous clay and tuffeau limestone soils. These soil types contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality. The region’s climate features a balance of maritime and continental influences, providing moderate temperatures that allow for the slow and even ripening of Cabernet Franc grapes. This climatic balance, combined with the unique soil composition, imparts complexity and depth to the wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2019 “Notre Histoire” was crafted from destemmed grapes that underwent fermentation in concrete vats, a method that helps preserve the purity of fruit and maintain temperature control. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in old casks for a year, allowing for subtle oxygenation without imparting strong oak flavors. This aging process enhances the wine’s complexity and allows the varietal character to shine. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, and only minimal sulfur was added at bottling to ensure stability while maintaining the wine’s natural expression.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 “Notre Histoire” presents a dark, full-bodied profile that showcases the wilder side of Cabernet Franc. On the nose, it offers rustic black fruit aromas intertwined with notes of pepper, earthiness, and barnyard nuances. The palate is rich with flavors of blue and black fruits, complemented by woody herbs and forest floor undertones. Hints of menthol and a slight garrigue add complexity, while the presence of barnyard notes contributes to its rustic charm. The wine’s structure is supported by ripe tannins and balanced acidity, leading to a mouthwatering and persistent finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This robust Cabernet Franc pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as roasted lamb, cassoulet, and grilled meats. Its earthy and peppery notes complement game dishes and rustic stews. The wine’s acidity and tannic structure also make it a suitable match for aged cheeses and charcuterie. For an adventurous pairing, consider dishes that incorporate earthy mushrooms or lentils, which will harmonize with the wine’s complex flavor profile.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the aromatic complexity and depth of the 2019 “Notre Histoire,” it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting the wine for approximately 30 minutes prior to serving can help to aerate it, allowing the bouquet to open up and the tannins to soften, enhancing the overall tasting experience. Utilizing medium-sized red wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature around 12°C (54°F), and with moderate humidity—the 2019 “Notre Histoire” has the potential to age gracefully for 5 to 7 years. As it matures, the wine is expected to develop additional layers of complexity, with tertiary notes such as dried fruits, leather, and earthy undertones emerging to complement the existing fruit and spice profile. Regularly monitoring the wine’s development will ensure it is enjoyed at its peak maturity.
