Winery Background and History
Domaine de Bargylus, established in 2003 by the Saadé family, is Syria’s premier modern winery. Located on the slopes of Mount Bargylus near Latakia, the estate revives ancient viticultural traditions dating back to Roman times. Despite the challenges posed by regional conflicts, the winery has consistently produced high-quality wines, gaining international recognition for its commitment to excellence and resilience.
Producer and Winemaker
Owned by brothers Karim and Sandro Saadé, Domaine de Bargylus operates under the consultancy of renowned French oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt. Due to security concerns, the Saadé brothers manage the winery remotely from Lebanon, coordinating with their Syrian team via digital communication. Grape samples are transported to Beirut for analysis, ensuring meticulous winemaking practices are upheld despite logistical challenges.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards are situated at elevations between 900 and 1,200 meters on Mount Bargylus, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. The soils are predominantly limestone and silex, contributing to the wine’s minerality and freshness. The high altitude and unique terroir provide optimal conditions for cultivating Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before undergoing fermentation. The wine is aged on its lees to enhance complexity and texture. The 2016 vintage experienced a relatively cool growing season, which preserved acidity and aromatic intensity. The resulting wine showcases the careful balance between fruit expression and structural elegance.
Tasting Notes
The 2016 Domaine de Bargylus Blanc presents a pale golden hue. The nose offers aromas of lemon, blood orange, white flowers, and subtle herbal notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied with vibrant acidity, displaying flavors of stone fruits, nuts, and honey. The wine exhibits a rounded, waxy richness, intense concentration, and a long, mineral-driven finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with grilled fish, poultry, and dishes featuring creamy sauces. Its acidity and body complement rich seafood preparations, such as lobster or scallops, as well as roasted chicken and veal. The wine’s complexity also makes it a suitable companion for aged cheeses and Mediterranean cuisine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the 2016 Domaine de Bargylus Blanc at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expressive qualities.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2016 vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 6–8 years, during which it will develop additional tertiary aromas and flavors, such as honey, nuts, and dried fruits, enhancing its complexity and depth.
