Winery Background and History
Maison Chanson, founded in 1750, has long operated as both négociant and landowner in Burgundy. Over the centuries, Chanson expanded its holdings and sharpened its technical capacities in vineyard management and cellar practices. The Chanson Père & Fils arm oversees estate bottlings and manages the balance between tradition and innovation, sourcing prime climats while investing in terroir expression. The Clos du Roi site is inherited from historical holdings (once belonging to Burgundy dukes), partly owned by Chanson (≈ 35 %).
Producer and Wine Maker
This wine is produced under Chanson Père & Fils. Their winemaking team applies strict sorting, gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentations, and long aging. Their philosophy leans toward “infusion over construction”—minimizing manipulation so the climats’ character comes through. For Clos du Roi, they often work with whole clusters, cold soak, and fractional pressing to preserve aromatics and clarity.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Clos du Roi climat lies north of Beaune, just above Les Marconnets, with clay, sand, and silt soils. Chanson owns about 2.4 hectares of it, with the parcel oriented southeast, benefiting from morning sun and good drainage. The Burgundy continental climate yields warm summers, cool nights, and vintage variance, which in 2022 included heat and late thunderstorms.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are chilled immediately on arrival, cold-soaked, and fermented (often 100 % whole cluster) with moderate maceration. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel on fine lees. Aging is ~20 months in French oak casks, with a judicious new oak component, to integrate structure without overpowering fruit.
Tasting notes
Bright ruby in color. The nose shows floral lift, ripe redcurrant, spice and subtle underbrush. On the palate, the wine is ample and precise, with silky tannins, red fruit core, spice, and a graceful persistent finish—balanced and generous.
Food & Wine Pairing
Pairs beautifully with duck breast with cherry sauce, roast pigeon, veal fillet with morels, lamb with herbs, game birds, and medium cheeses. Also suits dishes combining fruit reduction and mild savory notes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at about 15–17 °C. Use a Burgundy or Pinot Noir glass. Decant for 20–30 minutes to enhance aromatic expression and smooth tannins. Pour gently to avoid disturbing any sediment.
Storage and Aging Potential
With ideal cellar conditions (12-14 °C, stable humidity, darkness), this wine should evolve over 8 to 15 years, developing tertiary notes like earth, truffle, dried fruit, and forest floor while maintaining freshness.
