Winery Background and History
Domaine Castagnier, situated in Morey-Saint-Denis in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, is a family-run estate with a rich heritage. Currently managed by Jérôme and Jocelyne Castagnier, the domaine spans 4 hectares of vineyards, including holdings in four Grand Cru sites. The Castagnier family is dedicated to producing wines that reflect the unique terroirs of their vineyards, combining traditional methods with a commitment to quality.
Producer and Winemaker
Jérôme Castagnier, a former professional horn player, returned to his family’s estate to take over winemaking duties. He brings a meticulous approach to viticulture and vinification, emphasizing organic and biodynamic practices. Jérôme’s philosophy centers on expressing the purity and elegance of Pinot Noir, crafting wines that are both approachable and reflective of their origin.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards within the Coteaux Bourguignons appellation, which encompasses various terroirs across Burgundy. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, providing excellent drainage and mineral richness. The region’s temperate climate, with its warm days and cool nights, allows for optimal ripening of Pinot Noir, preserving acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in wooden barrels, maintaining contact with the skins to extract color and flavor. The wine is aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels that are 2 to 4 years old, allowing for subtle oak integration without overpowering the fruit.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 vintage presents an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it offers fragrant aromas of fresh pomegranate and redcurrant, complemented by earthy undertones and hints of citrus. The palate is deep yet balanced, showcasing remarkable freshness and light tannins that contribute to its excellent drinkability. This wine is a refined expression of Pinot Noir, offering both depth and approachability.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with poultry dishes such as roasted chicken or turkey, as well as veal and game meats like venison. Its freshness and light tannins also complement grilled vegetables and soft cheeses, making it a versatile choice for various cuisines.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve this Pinot Noir at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture. Using a Burgundy glass will enhance the wine’s bouquet and flavor profile. Decanting is not necessary but can be done for 30 minutes to allow the wine to open up.
Storage and Aging Potential
While this wine is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it has the structure to age gracefully for up to 5 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time.
