Winery Background and History
Domaine Bertagna, situated in Vougeot, Burgundy, boasts a rich history dating back to the 13th century when its vineyards were cultivated by Cistercian monks. In 1982, the Reh family acquired the estate, and since 1988, Eva Reh-Siddle has been at the helm. Under her leadership, the domaine has emphasized terroir expression, investing in modern winemaking techniques while respecting traditional practices. Today, Domaine Bertagna spans 20 hectares, producing wines from 18 appellations, including five Grands Crus and seven Premiers Crus, showcasing the diversity and quality of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits region.
Producer and Wine Maker
Eva Reh-Siddle, a member of the Reh family, has been managing Domaine Bertagna since 1988. With a background in both viticulture and business, she has modernized the estate’s operations, focusing on sustainable practices and precision winemaking. Eva’s philosophy centers on capturing the unique character of each vineyard, producing wines that reflect their specific terroirs. Her commitment to quality and innovation has positioned Domaine Bertagna as a leading producer in Burgundy.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Clos de la Perrière vineyard is a Premier Cru monopole located between the Grands Crus Clos de Vougeot and Musigny. This 2.26-hectare parcel features well-drained, stony limestone soils complemented by rich mineral clay deposits. The vines, some reaching 86 years old, benefit from a continental climate with warm summers and cool winters, ideal for cultivating Pinot Noir.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a strict selection process both in the vineyard and at the winery. A cold pre-fermentation maceration is followed by alcoholic fermentation at 82°F, using natural yeasts. Manual punch-downs are employed to gently extract color and tannins, with fermentation lasting 21 to 28 days. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels and is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, to enhance complexity while preserving the purity of fruit.
Tasting notes
The 2021 Clos de la Perrière Monopole exhibits elegant and subtle aromas of black fruits, truffle, and spices. On the palate, it offers intense flavors with hints of grilled almonds and underwood, complemented by a nice minerality. The tannins are delicate and silky, providing a refined character to the wine.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Premier Cru pairs excellently with dishes such as roasted duck, lamb, and tuna. Its depth and complexity also complement earthy flavors found in mushroom-based dishes and semi-soft cheeses like gouda and gruyere.
