Winery Background and History

Domaine A.-F. Gros, established in 1988 by Anne-Françoise Gros, is a distinguished estate in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Hailing from the renowned Gros family, with winemaking roots dating back to the 19th century, Anne-Françoise combined parcels from both her paternal and maternal lineages to form the domaine. Situated in Vosne-Romanée, the estate encompasses prestigious vineyards, including holdings in Richebourg and Echézeaux. The domaine is celebrated for its commitment to expressing the unique terroirs of each vineyard through meticulous viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques.

Producer and Winemaker

Anne-Françoise Gros, the proprietor and winemaker, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of Burgundy’s terroirs to her craft. Her philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine. Anne-Françoise employs traditional methods, including manual harvesting and fermentation with indigenous yeasts, to produce wines that are both expressive and elegant. Her dedication to quality and authenticity has solidified the domaine’s reputation among Burgundy enthusiasts.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The “Aux Réas” vineyard is a lieu-dit located in the village of Vosne-Romanée, within the Côte de Nuits sub-region. This site is characterized by its clay-limestone soils, which contribute to the wine’s structure and finesse. The vineyard benefits from a continental climate, with warm summers and cool winters, allowing for optimal ripening of Pinot Noir grapes. The combination of soil composition and microclimate imparts complexity and depth to the resulting wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, preserving the purity of the fruit. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new oak, for approximately 12 to 18 months. This aging process enhances the wine’s complexity and integrates its tannins, resulting in a harmonious and balanced profile.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas opens with an aromatic bouquet of black cherry, violet, and fresh raspberry, accented by notes of licorice, subtle earthiness, and a hint of clove. On the palate, it is graceful yet concentrated, featuring velvety tannins and a fine acidity that brings elegance and length to the finish. The wine showcases Vosne-Romanée’s characteristic balance and refinement, making it a quintessential expression of the appellation.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including roasted duck, veal, and game birds. Its elegance complements dishes like coq au vin, mushroom risotto, and grilled salmon. The wine’s acidity and tannic structure also make it a suitable match for aged cheeses, such as Comté or Brie de Meaux. These pairings enhance the wine’s complexity and highlight its nuanced flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture, serve this wine at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full bouquet and flavor profile. Use large Burgundy glasses to enhance the tasting experience, as they allow the wine’s aromas to concentrate and its flavors to unfold gracefully.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time. As it matures, expect the emergence of tertiary aromas such as truffle, forest floor, and dried fruit, adding to its allure and sophistication.
