Winery Background and History

Domaine A.-F. Gros, established in 1988 by Anne-Françoise Gros, is a renowned estate based in Pommard, Burgundy. While primarily known for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines from the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, the domaine also produces notable wines from the Beaujolais region, such as the Moulin-à-Vent En Mortperay.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking at Domaine A.-F. Gros is overseen by François Parent, Anne-Françoise’s husband, who brings his expertise to the cellar. Their son, Mathias Parent, is also involved in the winemaking process, ensuring the family’s commitment to quality and tradition continues.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The En Mortperay vineyard is located in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation of Beaujolais, known for producing some of the region’s most structured and age-worthy wines. The vineyard spans 3.8 hectares, with vines averaging 30 to 35 years in age. The granite-rich soils and favorable microclimate contribute to the wine’s complexity and depth.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo careful sorting to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation is carried out using traditional methods, followed by aging in French oak barrels. This process imparts subtle oak nuances while preserving the wine’s vibrant fruit character.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 vintage displays a deep ruby color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers generous aromas of red fruits, floral notes, and freshness. The palate is elegant, with soft tannins and a succulent core of fruit, leading to a long, balanced finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including roasted duck, veal, and game birds. Its elegance complements dishes like coq au vin, mushroom risotto, and grilled salmon. The wine’s acidity and tannic structure also make it a suitable match for aged cheeses, such as Comté or Brie de Meaux.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture, serve this wine at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full bouquet and flavor profile. Use large Burgundy glasses to enhance the tasting experience, as they allow the wine’s aromas to concentrate and its flavors to unfold gracefully.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2021 Moulin-à-Vent En Mortperay possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully for 5–8 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time. As it matures, expect the emergence of tertiary aromas such as truffle, forest floor, and dried fruit, adding to its allure and sophistication.
