Winery Background and History
Established in 1729 by Nicolas Ruinart in Reims, Champagne, Maison Ruinart holds the distinction of being the oldest Champagne house. Inspired by his uncle, Dom Thierry Ruinart, Nicolas transitioned from the family’s cloth business to focus solely on Champagne production. The house quickly gained renown for its elegant, Chardonnay-driven wines. Ruinart’s deep chalk cellars, acquired in 1768, provide ideal aging conditions and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, Ruinart is part of the LVMH group and continues to be celebrated for its commitment to tradition, innovation, and artistry.
Producer and Winemaker
Frédéric Panaïotis serves as the Chef de Cave (Cellar Master) at Ruinart, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep respect for the house’s heritage. Under his guidance, Ruinart emphasizes the expression of Chardonnay, crafting wines that are both refined and expressive. Panaïotis oversees every aspect of production, from vineyard selection to blending and aging, ensuring each cuvée reflects the house’s signature elegance and purity.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The 2009 Dom Ruinart Rosé is composed of 85% Chardonnay, predominantly sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, including Cramant, Avize, Chouilly, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The remaining 15% is Pinot Noir vinified as red wine from the Grand Cru village of Aÿ. The 2009 vintage experienced a challenging start with hail and rain but was followed by a dry, sunny summer, allowing for optimal grape maturation and the development of complex aromas.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Hand-harvested grapes underwent alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged on lees for at least 11 years, enhancing its complexity and texture. Disgorgement occurred in July 2018, with a dosage of 4 g/L, classifying it as an Extra Brut. This extended aging period contributes to the wine’s depth and refined character.
Tasting Notes
The Dom Ruinart Rosé 2009 displays a delicate pink hue with raspberry highlights. The nose opens with warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, transitioning to vibrant citrus aromas like blood orange and kumquat. Floral notes of violet and peony, along with subtle oyster shell nuances, add complexity. On the palate, the Champagne is enveloping and silky, featuring tangy red fruits like pomegranate and redcurrant. The mid-palate is smooth and saline, leading to a firm, intense finish supported by a delicate bitterness and fine effervescence.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Champagne pairs beautifully with oily fish such as salmon or mackerel, as well as white meats seasoned with warm spices or citrus elements. Vegetable dishes featuring squash or carrots complement its flavor profile. The wine’s structure and acidity also make it a suitable match for dishes with umami flavors, including certain Asian cuisines.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the Dom Ruinart Rosé 2009 at a temperature between 10–12°C (50–54°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Use a tulip-shaped glass or a white wine glass with a wide opening to allow the bouquet to develop and the bubbles to evolve. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its expressive qualities.
Storage and Aging Potential
When stored in optimal conditions—darkness, temperatures between 7–18°C (45–64°F), and humidity above 70%—this Champagne can continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5 to 10 years. Over time, it is expected to develop richer, more nuanced flavors, including notes of honey and toasted nuts, while retaining its underlying freshness and elegance.
