Winery Background and History

Established in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, De Bortoli Wines has grown into one of Australia’s most esteemed family-owned wineries. Initially rooted in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.

Producer and Winemaker

The 2023 DB Family Selection Traminer Riesling was crafted under the guidance of Winemaker John Coughlan, who brings extensive experience and a passion for producing premium wines. Coughlan’s meticulous approach ensures that each vintage maintains its renowned quality and character. His philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the Gewürztraminer and Riesling grapes to shine through in the final product.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for this wine are sourced from De Bortoli’s vineyards in the Riverina region of New South Wales, known for its diverse microclimates and fertile soils. The 2023 growing season featured average rains during winter and early spring, benefiting vine health and fruitfulness. A mild growing season with no prolonged heatwaves provided perfect ripening conditions, allowing the fruit to retain good varietal characteristics and to be harvested at optimal ripeness and flavor.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The fruit was harvested at optimal ripeness to achieve a harmonious balance between freshness of fruit and ripeness of tannins. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to retain fresh fruit characters. A portion of French and American oak was used during maturation to enhance complexity and structure. This approach results in a wine that is both approachable and layered with flavor.

Tasting notes

The 2023 DB Family Selection Traminer Riesling exhibits a pale straw color. The nose offers aromas of lychee, rose petals, and citrus fruits. On the palate, it presents a medium-bodied profile with flavors of tropical fruits and a hint of spice, balanced by crisp acidity. The wine is fresh, aromatic, and slightly off-dry, making it an ideal choice for various occasions.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Traminer Riesling pairs well with a variety of dishes, including spicy Asian cuisine, seafood, and light salads. Its vibrant acidity and aromatic profile also complement dishes like Thai green curry, sushi, and soft cheeses. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this Traminer Riesling, serve it chilled at a temperature between 8–10°C (46–50°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly narrower bowl to concentrate the aromas. No decanting is necessary. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit and acidity to shine through with elegance and balance.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2023 DB Family Selection Traminer Riesling is crafted for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term aging. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness and may develop additional complexity over the next 2–3 years.
