Winery Background and History

Established in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, De Bortoli Wines has grown into one of Australia’s most esteemed family-owned wineries. Initially rooted in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.

Producer and Winemaker

The 2020 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay was crafted under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Steve Webber, a pivotal figure in De Bortoli’s Yarra Valley operations. Webber emphasizes minimal intervention and a focus on expressing the unique characteristics of the vineyard. His approach combines traditional techniques with modern practices to produce wines that are both expressive and reflective of their terroir.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Estate Vineyard, located in Dixons Creek within the Yarra Valley, comprises small plots of mature Chardonnay vines, with plantings dating back to 1976. The Yarra Valley’s cool-climate conditions, characterized by moderate temperatures and diverse soils, contribute to the development of Chardonnay grapes with complexity and finesse. The 2020 growing season featured a warm and early start with timely rainfall, resulting in grapes with balanced flavors and natural acidity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes were hand-harvested and underwent whole-bunch pressing, followed by a brief settling period. The juice was then racked into a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for natural fermentation. Lees stirring occurred in late autumn, and the wine remained on its lees until November, enhancing texture and complexity. This vegan-friendly wine was bottled under screw cap to preserve its freshness.

Tasting notes

The 2020 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay exhibits a pale straw color with green hues. The nose offers delicate aromas of white flowers, hints of citrus, and seaspray. On the palate, it presents fine, minerally, and savory flavors with drying phenolics, texture, and charm.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Chardonnay pairs well with a variety of dishes, including seafood such as grilled prawns or seared scallops, roasted poultry, and creamy pasta dishes. Its vibrant acidity and minerality also complement dishes like mushroom risotto and soft cheeses. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this Chardonnay, serve it chilled at a temperature between 10–12°C (50–54°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly wider bowl to allow the aromas to develop. No decanting is necessary. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, oak, and acidity to shine through with elegance and balance.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2020 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay is crafted for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term aging. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness and may develop additional complexity over the next 4–5 years.
