Winery Background and History
Founded in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, De Bortoli Wines has evolved into one of Australia’s most esteemed family-owned wineries. Initially established in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.
Producer and Winemaker
The 2019 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay was crafted under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Steve Webber, a pivotal figure in De Bortoli’s Yarra Valley operations. Webber emphasizes minimal intervention and a focus on expressing the unique characteristics of the vineyard. His approach combines traditional techniques with modern practices to produce wines that are both expressive and reflective of their terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Estate Vineyard, located in Dixons Creek within the Yarra Valley, comprises small plots of mature Chardonnay vines, with plantings dating back to 1976. The 2019 growing season was marked by warm and early conditions with timely rainfall, resulting in grapes with balanced flavors and natural acidity. The cool-climate region, characterized by its rolling hills and diverse soils, contributes to the development of Chardonnay grapes with complexity and finesse.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were hand-harvested over eight days starting on February 19, 2019. They underwent whole-bunch pressing and were allowed to settle for 4–6 hours before being racked into new and used French oak barrels for natural fermentation. Lees stirring occurred in late autumn, and the wine remained on its lees until November, enhancing texture and complexity. This vegan-friendly wine was then bottled under screw cap to preserve its freshness.
Tasting notes
The 2019 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay exhibits a pale straw color with green hues. The nose offers aromas of lemon blossom, ripe apple, pear, and subtle hints of white flowers and seaspray. On the palate, it presents flavors of lemon, melon, and garden-fresh notes, complemented by a fine minerality and tangy, crystallized acidity. The wine is medium-bodied with a crisp, textured mouthfeel and a long, balanced finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chardonnay pairs well with a variety of dishes, including seafood shepherd’s pie, oyster po’ boy sandwiches, and fish tacos. Its vibrant acidity and minerality also complement dishes like grilled chicken, creamy pasta, and soft cheeses. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the nuances of this Chardonnay, serve it chilled at a temperature between 10–12°C (50–54°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly wider bowl to allow the aromas to develop. No decanting is necessary. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, oak, and acidity to shine through with elegance and balance.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2019 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay is crafted for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term aging. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness and may develop additional complexity over the next 4–5 years.
