Winery Background and History
Founded in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, a renowned winemaker from Meursault, Domaine des Héritiers du Comte Lafon is a pioneering estate in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy. Recognizing the untapped potential of the area’s terroirs, Lafon invested in high-altitude, old-vine parcels, transforming the perception of Mâconnais wines. The estate is committed to biodynamic farming and traditional winemaking techniques, producing Chardonnays that reflect purity, elegance, and a strong sense of place.
Producer and Winemaker
Dominique Lafon, celebrated for his work in Meursault, established Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon to explore the Mâconnais’s potential. In 2006, he appointed Caroline Gon as head winemaker. Under her guidance, the estate continues its dedication to biodynamic practices and minimal intervention, crafting wines that express the unique characteristics of each vineyard. Their collaborative approach ensures consistency and excellence across vintages.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Viré-Clessé appellation lies in the Mâconnais sub-region of Burgundy, characterized by rolling hills and limestone-rich soils. The estate’s parcels are situated at elevations around 250 meters, with east-facing slopes that benefit from optimal sun exposure. The combination of clay-limestone soils and a continental climate with warm days and cool nights contributes to the wines’ freshness, minerality, and aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo gentle pressing. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in large 45-hectoliter oak casks and 500-liter demi-muids, preserving the wine’s purity and texture. The wine is aged on its lees for approximately 10 months, enhancing mouthfeel and complexity. This approach emphasizes the expression of terroir and the Chardonnay grape’s intrinsic qualities.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Viré-Clessé presents a bouquet of yellow flowers and a touch of peach skin. On the palate, it is well-balanced with a saline entry, fine depth, and impressive persistency. The wine exhibits vibrant aromas of white flowers, Meyer lemon, and subtle hints of hazelnut, leading to a precise and elegant finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with seafood dishes such as grilled scallops, lobster, or oysters. Its crisp acidity and mineral backbone complement creamy sauces and rich textures, making it an excellent match for poultry dishes like roast chicken or turkey. For cheese pairings, consider soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert to enhance the wine’s subtle complexity.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve this wine chilled at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) in a white wine glass to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expressive qualities. Enjoy within the next few years to experience its fresh and vibrant character.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. While the 2022 vintage is approachable in its youth, it possesses the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 5 to 7 years. Over time, the wine will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of honey and toasted nuts emerging.
