Winery Background and History
Founded in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, a renowned figure from Meursault, Domaine des Héritiers du Comte Lafon is situated in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy. Lafon’s vision was to showcase the potential of the Mâconnais terroir by producing high-quality wines using biodynamic practices. Starting with 7 hectares in Milly-Lamartine, the estate has expanded to include several notable vineyards, emphasizing minimal intervention and a deep respect for nature. Today, the domaine is celebrated for crafting expressive Chardonnays that reflect the unique characteristics of their origin.
Producer and Winemaker
Dominique Lafon, hailed as one of Burgundy’s most influential winemakers, leads the estate with a commitment to excellence and innovation. His approach combines traditional Burgundian techniques with a forward-thinking mindset, ensuring wines of purity and elegance. Lafon’s dedication to biodynamic viticulture and his meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar have solidified the estate’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the Mâconnais.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The “Les Maranches” vineyard spans 1.8 hectares in the village of Uchizy, located at an elevation of 200 meters. Planted with Chardonnay vines aged between 30 and 45 years, the site features shallow clay soils interspersed with white limestone, contributing to the wine’s minerality. The region’s continental climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, allows for optimal ripening while preserving acidity, resulting in wines of balance and freshness.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested at peak maturity and fermented using indigenous yeasts in large oak foudres of 45 to 48 hectoliters. The wine undergoes aging on its lees for 7 to 8 months, enhancing texture and complexity without the influence of new oak. This approach aims to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir, resulting in a wine that is both vibrant and nuanced.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches presents a pale golden hue. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe peach, nectarine, and acacia flowers, complemented by subtle spice notes. The palate is well-balanced, featuring a saline entry, medium body, and a creamy texture. Flavors of green apple and citrus are underscored by a refreshing acidity, leading to a long, spicy finish. This wine embodies both elegance and vitality.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including white meats like chicken and turkey, seafood such as brill and prawn-based dishes, and vegetarian options like porcini bruschetta. Its crisp acidity and mineral undertones also complement creamy risottos and soft cheeses like Manchego, making it a versatile choice for diverse culinary experiences.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve this wine chilled at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. While the 2022 vintage is approachable now, it has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years. With time, the wine’s flavors will evolve, offering additional complexity and depth.
