Winery Background and History
Established in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, a renowned figure in Burgundy’s winemaking scene, Domaine des Héritiers du Comte Lafon is situated in the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy. Recognizing the untapped potential of this area, Dominique invested in higher-altitude, old-vine parcels and implemented biodynamic farming practices. The domaine has since become a beacon for quality Chardonnay production in the region, showcasing the unique terroir of Mâconnais.
Producer and Winemaker
Dominique Lafon, known for his work at Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, brings his expertise to this venture. His approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard’s character to shine through. The winemaking process involves the use of indigenous yeasts and aging in larger, neutral oak barrels to preserve the wine’s freshness and minerality.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards located at approximately 350 meters altitude on steep, east-facing slopes. The soils are composed of shallow clay over limestone with abundant rocks, contributing to the wine’s mineral profile. The vines are over 35 years old and are farmed biodynamically, reflecting the domaine’s commitment to sustainable viticulture.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvested grapes undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in a combination of large 45-hectoliter barrels and 500-liter demi-muids. This method allows for subtle oak influence, maintaining the wine’s purity and expression of terroir.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine offers a lively bouquet with citrus fruit aromas, accented by a touch of menthol. On the palate, it is well-balanced with good concentration, featuring flavors of ripe stone fruits, lemon zest, and a hint of smoke. The finish is persistent and mineral-driven, showcasing the wine’s vibrant acidity.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chardonnay pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including seafood, poultry, and creamy cheeses. Its bright acidity and mineral profile complement rich and savory dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine chilled at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now for its vibrant freshness but also has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years, developing additional complexity and nuanced characteristics.
