Winery Background and History

Founded in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon is the Mâconnais extension of the esteemed Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault. Recognizing the untapped potential of the Mâconnais region, Dominique aimed to produce high-quality Chardonnay that reflects the unique terroirs of southern Burgundy. The estate practices organic and biodynamic viticulture, emphasizing minimal intervention to allow the vineyards’ natural characteristics to shine.

Producer and Winemaker

Dominique Lafon, a visionary in Burgundy winemaking, leads the estate with a commitment to excellence and respect for tradition. His approach combines meticulous vineyard management with careful winemaking techniques to produce wines that are both expressive and refined. The winemaking team focuses on capturing the essence of each vineyard site, ensuring that every bottle reflects its origin.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Le Monsard vineyard is a small, south-facing plot located in Mâcon-Bussières, characterized by red clay soils and a steep incline. This unique terroir contributes to the wine’s concentration and complexity. The vineyard’s microclimate, with its ample sunlight and well-drained soils, allows for optimal ripening of the Chardonnay grapes, resulting in a wine with both richness and freshness.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in large oak foudres using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged on its lees for several months, enhancing its texture and complexity. This approach allows the wine to develop depth and character while preserving its vibrant acidity and fruit purity.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Le Monsard offers a lively bouquet of peach skin and caramelized pear aromas. On the palate, it is well-balanced with impressive concentration, displaying opulent flavors and a touch of lemongrass towards the persistent, generous finish. The wine’s rich texture is complemented by refreshing acidity, making it both indulgent and invigorating.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted chicken, creamy pasta, and grilled seafood. Its richness complements buttery sauces, while its acidity cuts through heavier dishes, providing balance. The wine’s complexity also makes it a great match for aged cheeses and mushroom-based recipes.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the wine well-chilled at 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage is best enjoyed within 2 to 3 years of release to capture its vibrant freshness and aromatic intensity. While it can be consumed immediately, proper storage will maintain its quality over the short term.
