Winery Background and History

Cloudy Bay Vineyards was founded in 1985 in Marlborough by David Hohnen and gained global acclaim with its Sauvignon Blanc. Acquired by LVMH in 2003, the winery expanded to produce high-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wines—celebrated for its focus on terroir, finesse, and consistency  .


Producer & Wine Maker

Crafted by Cloudy Bay’s experienced winemaking team using both traditional and innovative methods. The 2022 Chardonnay is fermented and aged in French oak (15% new) using wild and cultured yeasts, with controlled malolactic fermentation and 11 months on lees for texture and complexity ().


Vineyards & Micro Climate

Sourced from 76 vineyard plots across stony soils in the Wairau Valley and clay-rich Southern Valleys, at Marlborough’s warm days and cool nights—providing vibrant fruit with balanced acidity  .


Vinification & Aging Methods

Whole-bunch pressed Chardonnay ferments in French oak barrels (15% new). After ferment it rests for approximately 11 months on lees, with 27% undergoing malolactic fermentation—resulting in a creamy mouthfeel and elegant complexity  .


Tasting Notes

 

  • Nose: Bright Meyer lemon, white nectarine, delicate vanilla and crème brûlée nuances 

  • Palate: Crisp citrus, conference pear, stone fruit, subtle spice, texture from lees, finishing with refreshing saline-mineral tension  .

Storage & Aging Potential

Enjoy now through 2027–2028, with the ability to evolve gently over 5–10 years when cellared upright in cool (12–14 °C), dark conditions ().
