Winery Background and History

Clos de la Tech, founded by TJ and Valeta Rodgers in the late 1990s, is a boutique winery located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. The winery is renowned for its commitment to producing Pinot Noir wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Employing traditional Burgundian techniques combined with modern technology, Clos de la Tech emphasizes minimal intervention and sustainable practices. The estate’s dedication to quality and innovation has positioned it as a notable producer in the Californian wine landscape.

Producer and Winemaker

TJ Rodgers, the founder of Clos de la Tech, is deeply involved in the winemaking process, bringing his background in engineering to the vineyard and cellar. The winemaking team focuses on meticulous vineyard management and employs techniques such as whole-cluster fermentation and gravity-flow winemaking. Their approach aims to capture the essence of the vineyard’s terroir, producing wines that are expressive and age-worthy.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Domaine Lois Louise vineyard, where the Cote Sud block is located, is perched on steep, south-facing slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. This unique positioning provides optimal sun exposure and is influenced by cool Pacific Ocean breezes, creating a microclimate ideal for Pinot Noir cultivation. The vineyard’s rocky soils and elevation contribute to the complexity and structure of the wines produced.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2013 Cote Sud Pinot Noir underwent whole-cluster fermentation using native yeasts, followed by foot treading and malolactic fermentation on the lees. The wine was aged for 18 months in François Frères French oak barrels, with a significant portion being new oak. This aging process aimed to enhance the wine’s depth and complexity while preserving its varietal character.

Tasting Notes

The 2013 Cote Sud Pinot Noir exhibits a deep ruby hue and offers a complex aromatic profile of shiitake mushrooms, damp cedar, dried berries, and savory meats. On the palate, it presents flavors of baked red plum, mulberry, black pepper, and cocoa, culminating in a charcuterie-like finish. The wine’s texture is notably leathery, providing a robust and layered tasting experience.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Pinot Noir pairs well with dishes that complement its earthy and savory characteristics. Ideal pairings include roasted duck, mushroom risotto, and grilled lamb. The wine’s complexity also makes it a suitable match for aged cheeses and charcuterie boards.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2013 Cote Sud Pinot Noir, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature of 60-65°F (15-18°C). Decanting the wine for at least an hour prior to serving can help to open up its aromatic profile and soften the tannins, enhancing the overall tasting experience. Using large, bowl-shaped glasses will also allow the wine’s aromas to concentrate, providing a more immersive sensory experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2013 Cote Sud Pinot Noir possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully over the next 10-15 years. Proper cellaring conditions—consistent temperature around 55°F (13°C), appropriate humidity levels, and protection from light and vibration—will ensure the wine develops additional complexity and depth over time. Collectors and enthusiasts can expect the wine to evolve, revealing tertiary notes that add to its allure.
