Winery Background and History
Churton Wines, founded in 1997 by Sam and Mandy Weaver, is a family-owned estate located in the Waihopai Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand. The winery is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, aiming to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards. Churton’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and the land to shine through in their wines.
Producer and Winemaker
Sam Weaver, a trained microbiologist and the founder of Churton Wines, also serves as the head winemaker. His scientific background informs his meticulous approach to winemaking, combining traditional techniques with modern understanding. Sam’s son, Ben Weaver, has joined the family business, contributing to both vineyard management and winemaking, ensuring the continuity of Churton’s quality and philosophy.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Churton vineyard spans 22 hectares and is situated on north-facing slopes at an elevation of approximately 200 meters. The soils are predominantly clay over silt, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity of the wines. The vineyard’s orientation and elevation result in a cooler microclimate, allowing for a longer growing season and the development of nuanced flavors in the grapes.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a natural fermentation process using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for approximately 12 months. This approach allows the wine to develop complexity and structure while preserving the delicate fruit characteristics inherent to Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Churton Marlborough Pinot Noir exhibits a vibrant ruby hue. On the nose, it offers aromas of sandalwood, violets, and wild cranberries. The palate is complex, featuring flavors of dark cherry, subtle spice, and a hint of Darjeeling tea. The wine is textural and poised, with mouth-watering tannins and a fine, long finish, showcasing the elegance and depth characteristic of Churton’s terroir.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Pinot Noir pairs excellently with dishes such as duck confit, grilled salmon, or mushroom risotto. Its bright acidity and complex flavor profile complement the richness of these dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience. Additionally, it can be enjoyed with a selection of soft cheeses or charcuterie for a delightful pairing.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine slightly chilled at 14°C to 16°C (57°F to 61°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Using medium-sized Pinot Noir glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving can help open up the wine’s bouquet and enhance its flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2021 vintage can be enjoyed now for its vibrant freshness but also has the potential to age gracefully over the next 5 to 7 years. With time, the wine may develop additional complexity, showcasing earthy and nuanced characteristics.
