Winery Background and History

Chêne Bleu is a boutique winery located in the Southern Rhône Valley of France, at the intersection of the Rhône and Provence regions. The estate, known as La Verrière, dates back to the 9th century and was meticulously restored by Xavier and Nicole Rolet in the late 1990s. Their vision was to create wines that transcend traditional appellation boundaries, focusing on quality and expression of terroir. Chêne Bleu practices organic and biodynamic viticulture, emphasizing sustainability and biodiversity.

Producer and Winemaker

Chêne Bleu is owned by Xavier and Nicole Rolet, who have been instrumental in revitalizing the estate. The winemaking team is led by Jean-Louis Gallucci, who collaborates with renowned consultants Zelma Long and Philippe Cambie. Their combined expertise ensures that each wine reflects the unique characteristics of the high-altitude vineyards and the meticulous care taken in both vineyard and cellar practices.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The vineyards of Chêne Bleu are situated at an elevation of approximately 550 meters above sea level, near the village of Crestet in the Vaucluse department. This high-altitude location provides a cooler microclimate, allowing for longer ripening periods and the development of complex flavors. The soils are diverse, comprising clay, limestone, and schist, contributing to the mineral complexity of the wines. The estate’s commitment to organic and biodynamic farming enhances the expression of terroir in their wines.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2007 Héloïse is a blend of 60% Syrah, 37% Grenache, and 3% Viognier. Each varietal is vinified separately to preserve its unique characteristics. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels for 11 months. The Grenache comes from vines over 40 years old, and the Syrah from 30-year-old vines, contributing to the wine’s depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Chêne Bleu Héloïse 2007 presents a deep ruby-red color. The nose is concentrated and rich, offering aromas of ripe red fruits, black pepper, smoke, cedar wood, and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet balanced, with velvety tannins and a structured body. The ripe Grenache from old vines provides high notes of red fruit, complemented by the intensity of Syrah. The finish is long and elegant, showcasing the wine’s complexity and finesse.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with rich and flavorful dishes such as roasted lamb, beef stew, or game meats. Its robust structure and complex flavors also complement aged cheeses and hearty vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto or eggplant parmesan. The wine’s balance of fruit and spice enhances the flavors of the food, making for a harmonious dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the complexity of Chêne Bleu Héloïse 2007, serve it at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting the wine for at least one hour before serving is recommended to allow the aromas and flavors to open up. Use a large, wide-bowled red wine glass to concentrate the bouquet and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

Chêne Bleu Héloïse 2007 has excellent aging potential due to its balanced structure and acidity. When stored properly in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature, the wine can evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years. Over time, expect the development of more complex tertiary aromas and a deeper, more integrated palate.
