Winery Background and History
Château Troplong Mondot, located in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The estate was initially established by Abbé Raymond de Sèze, who constructed the château and laid the foundation for its viticultural legacy. Over the centuries, the property changed hands among notable families, including the Troplong and Valette families, each contributing to its development and reputation. In 2006, Château Troplong Mondot was elevated to the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé B, reflecting its commitment to excellence in winemaking. The estate encompasses 37 hectares of vineyards planted primarily with Merlot, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, thriving on limestone-rich soils that impart distinct minerality to the wines. In recent years, the estate has focused on sustainable viticulture and modernization of its winemaking facilities to enhance quality while honoring its storied heritage.
Producer and Winemaker
As of the 2018 vintage, Château Troplong Mondot was under the ownership of the French insurance company SOCR, which acquired the estate in 2017. Aymeric de Gironde, formerly of Château Cos d’Estournel, was appointed as the estate’s director, bringing a vision of crafting wines that balance power with elegance. The winemaking team, including esteemed consultant Thomas Duclos, emphasizes precision in both vineyard management and vinification processes to express the unique terroir of Saint-Émilion.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The 37-hectare vineyard of Château Troplong Mondot is situated on the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, with soils comprising clay and flint over limestone. This composition provides excellent drainage and imparts a distinct minerality to the wines. The elevation and exposure of the vineyards contribute to a favorable microclimate, allowing for optimal ripening of the grapes. The 2018 growing season was notable for its early start, with the first grapes harvested on September 7. A warm and dry summer facilitated even ripening, resulting in grapes with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2018 Château Troplong Mondot is a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes were hand-harvested to ensure optimal selection. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing for precise management of the process. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 12 to 15 months. This aging process contributed to the development of complexity and structure in the wine.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2018 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 14.5%.
Tasting Notes
The 2018 Château Troplong Mondot presents a deep garnet-purple color. On the nose, it offers aromas of blackberry, blueberry, black truffle, bark, and stone, with chalk and minerality. The palate is medium to full-bodied, delivering fresh, energetic black fruit with a racy line of freshness, firm, rounded tannins, and a long finish with mineral, earth, and dried herb layers.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with roasted meats, particularly lamb and beef, as well as game dishes. Its balanced acidity and refined tannins complement the richness of these foods, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving to allow it to fully express its aromas and flavors. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under proper conditions—away from light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—this wine has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years. It is suitable for consumption now but can be cellared to enhance its tertiary characteristics.
