Winery Background and History
Château Talbot, located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France, is a historic estate with roots tracing back to the 15th century. The château is named after Sir John Talbot, an English nobleman and military commander who was defeated at the Battle of Castillon in 1453 during the Hundred Years’ War. In 1918, the Cordier family acquired the estate, and it has remained under their stewardship ever since. Over the years, Château Talbot has earned a reputation for producing wines that exemplify the elegance and balance characteristic of Saint-Julien.
Producer and Winemaker
As of the 2015 vintage, Château Talbot was managed by the Cordier family, with Nancy Bignon-Cordier overseeing operations. The winemaking team included renowned consultants Stéphane Derenoncourt and Eric Boissenot, who collaborated to craft wines that reflect the estate’s unique terroir. Their combined expertise ensured meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard management and vinification processes.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The estate’s vineyards encompass approximately 102 hectares, planted predominantly with 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 4.5% Petit Verdot, and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. Situated on gravelly soils typical of the Médoc region, these well-draining terrains are ideal for cultivating the classic Bordeaux varietals. The proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a moderating influence on the climate, reducing temperature extremes and promoting a long, even ripening period. The 2015 growing season was favorable, characterized by a warm and dry summer, which allowed the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness, resulting in wines with balanced acidity and refined tannins.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2015 Château Talbot is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvesting was conducted manually to ensure the selection of only the finest grapes. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing for precise management of fermentation kinetics. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for a period of approximately 12 to 15 months. This aging process imparted complexity and structure to the wine while preserving the purity of the fruit.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2015 vintage has an alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.
Tasting Notes
The 2015 Château Talbot presents a deep purple color. On the nose, it offers refined and floral aromas with red fruits combined with a delicate and precise oak. The palate is dense, silky, and fleshy with great elegance of fine tannins, leading to a deep length finishing with black fruits. This racy Talbot is very promising.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with roasted meats, particularly lamb and beef, as well as game dishes. Its balanced acidity and refined tannins complement the richness of these foods, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving to allow it to fully express its aromas and flavors. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under proper conditions—away from light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—this wine has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years. It is suitable for consumption now but can be cellared to enhance its tertiary characteristics.
