Winery Background and History
Château Prieuré-Lichine, located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was established as a Benedictine priory. Over the centuries, the estate transitioned to viticulture and gained prominence under various ownerships. In 1951, Alexis Lichine, a renowned wine writer and merchant, acquired the estate and significantly enhanced its reputation by expanding the vineyards and modernizing winemaking practices. Today, the château is recognized for producing elegant wines that embody the quintessential characteristics of Margaux.
Producer and Winemaker
As of the 2014 vintage, Château Prieuré-Lichine was under the ownership of the Ballande Group, which acquired the estate in 1999. The winemaking team was led by Stéphane Derenoncourt, a renowned consultant known for his expertise in crafting refined Bordeaux wines.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s vineyards span approximately 77.5 hectares, dispersed across various plots within the Margaux appellation. The diverse terroir includes well-drained Garonne gravel soils, typical of the region, which are ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a moderating influence on the climate, reducing temperature extremes and promoting a long, even ripening period. This microclimate contributes to the development of complex aromatics and the elegant structure characteristic of Prieuré-Lichine wines.
Grape Varietals
The 2014 Château Prieuré-Lichine is a blend of classic Bordeaux varietals, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2014 vintage underwent traditional vinification processes. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve the purity of fruit flavors. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, to impart complexity and structure. The exact duration of aging and the percentage of new oak used were tailored to the characteristics of the vintage to achieve a harmonious balance.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
The 2014 vintage has an alcohol content of 13%.
Tasting Notes
The 2014 Château Prieuré-Lichine presents a fragrant and very attractive mid-weight profile, with plenty of ripe fruit to balance the full, dry tannins, which give it some real power on the finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with roasted meats, particularly lamb and beef, as well as game dishes. Its balanced acidity and refined tannins complement the richness of these foods, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving to allow it to fully express its aromas and flavors. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under proper conditions—away from light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity—this wine has the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years. It is suitable for consumption now but can be cellared to enhance its tertiary characteristics.
