Winery Background and History
Château Pegau is the sister estate of the renowned Domaine du Pegau, both under the stewardship of the Féraud family, whose viticultural roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape date back to 1670. Established to expand the family’s winemaking endeavors beyond Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Pegau is situated approximately four miles southeast of the appellation. The estate focuses on producing wines that reflect the traditional Rhône Valley style, emphasizing authenticity and terroir expression.
Producer and Winemaker
Laurence Féraud, a prominent figure in Rhône Valley winemaking, leads Château Pegau. With a philosophy rooted in minimal intervention and traditional methods, Laurence ensures that each wine expresses its unique origin. Her approach involves organic farming practices, native yeast fermentations, and aging in large, neutral vessels to preserve the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards of Château Pegau are located in the Southern Rhône Valley, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and the cooling influence of the Mistral wind. The soils are composed of galets roulés (rounded stones), clay, and limestone, providing excellent drainage and heat retention. These conditions are ideal for cultivating Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, the primary grape varieties in the Cuvée Sétier.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2022 Cuvée Sétier is crafted from a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. The grapes are harvested from vines aged between 35 to 60 years, ensuring concentration and complexity. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts over 10 to 14 days, with two pump-overs per day to extract color and tannins. The wine is then delicately pressed and aged in enamel-lined tanks, avoiding oak influence to maintain the wine’s freshness and varietal expression.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 vintage presents a deep red hue with purple highlights. On the nose, it offers concentrated aromas of cassis, licorice, black cherry, and tar. The palate is medium-bodied, showcasing ripe, well-structured tannins, intense fruit flavors, and a long, lingering finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This robust red pairs excellently with bold, flavorful red meat preparations such as pepper-rubbed steak and lamb with thyme. Its structure and depth also complement dishes like duck cassoulet, grilled game meats, and rich stews.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its nuances, serve the wine at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 30 minutes prior to serving can enhance its aromatic complexity and allow the wine to open up gracefully. Using appropriate glassware, such as a large red wine glass, will also help to showcase the wine’s aromatic profile.
Storage and Aging Potential
While enjoyable now, the 2022 Cuvée Sétier possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully for 5–7 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time.
