Winery Background and History

Château Paradis Casseuil, located in the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, France, is a historic estate with roots dating back several centuries. In 1984, the estate was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), renowned for their prestigious Bordeaux holdings. Under the Rothschild family’s stewardship, the vineyard has been revitalized, focusing on producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The estate’s commitment to excellence and tradition is evident in its meticulous vineyard management and winemaking practices.

Producer and Winemaker

Château Paradis Casseuil is produced under the guidance of the winemaking team at Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). The team’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural expression of the vineyard’s terroir to shine through. By combining traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques with modern innovations, they craft wines that are both elegant and approachable, maintaining the high standards associated with the Rothschild name.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The estate’s vineyards are situated in the rolling hills of Sainte-Foy-la-Longue, within the Entre-Deux-Mers region. The area benefits from a temperate maritime climate, with ample sunshine and moderate rainfall, ideal for grape cultivation. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone and gravel, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity of the wines. The diverse terroir supports the growth of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, the primary grape varieties used in the estate’s red blends.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve their aromatic qualities. Post-fermentation, the wine is aged partly in oak barrels, with approximately 60% of the blend seeing oak maturation. This aging process imparts subtle woody notes and enhances the wine’s structure, resulting in a balanced and harmonious profile that reflects the estate’s commitment to quality.

Tasting Notes

Château Paradis Casseuil 2020 exhibits a deep ruby color. The nose is characterized by intense fruity aromas, including ripe blackberries and plums, complemented by subtle notes of oak and spice. On the palate, the wine is well-structured and harmonious, with silky tannins providing a smooth texture. Flavors of dark fruits, such as blackcurrant and cherry, are prominent, with underlying hints of tobacco and vanilla from the oak aging. The finish is long and elegant, with a balanced acidity that leaves a lasting impression.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including grilled red meats, lamb, and game. Its robust structure and complex flavors also complement aged cheeses and rich stews. For a vegetarian option, consider pairing it with mushroom-based dishes or lentil casseroles.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its complexity, serve Château Paradis Casseuil 2020 at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for at least 30 minutes before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic potential. Use a Bordeaux-style glass to concentrate its aromas and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

Château Paradis Casseuil 2020 is suitable for aging and can be cellared for up to 5–7 years under proper conditions. Store the wine horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and humidity to allow it to develop additional complexity over time.
