Winery Background and History

Chateau Musar, established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, is a renowned winery located in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. Over the decades, it has gained international acclaim for its unique and natural winemaking approach, producing wines that reflect the rich history and terroir of the region. The Hochar family has maintained a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing their wines to develop character and complexity. Despite challenges, including Lebanon’s civil war, Chateau Musar has remained committed to its craft, with Serge Hochar, Gaston’s son, being named Decanter’s first ‘Man of the Year’ in 1984 for his dedication to winemaking.

Producer and Winemaker

The 2016 vintage was produced under the guidance of the Hochar family, with a focus on traditional methods and natural fermentation processes. The winemaking team emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the wine to express its unique characteristics derived from the Bekaa Valley’s terroir.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Chateau Musar’s vineyards are situated in the Bekaa Valley, at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. This elevation provides a unique microclimate with hot, dry summers and cool nights, which contribute to the slow ripening of grapes, enhancing flavor development and acidity. The soil composition is primarily gravelly with a limestone base, offering excellent drainage and imparting mineral complexity to the wines. The Bekaa Valley’s climate and soil conditions are ideal for cultivating grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, which are used in Chateau Musar’s red blends.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2016 Chateau Musar is a blend of approximately 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cinsault, and 33% Carignan.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes were hand-harvested in late September 2016. Fermentation occurred with natural yeasts in concrete vats, with temperatures reaching up to 33°C. The wines were then aged for 12 months in French Nevers oak barrels before blending in 2018. Bottling took place in 2019, and the wine was released after several years of bottle aging, adhering to Chateau Musar’s tradition of extended maturation to ensure optimal development and integration of flavors.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Chateau Musar displays a deep ruby color with high viscosity. Aromas of red cherries, plums, carob, and figs dominate the nose, accompanied by hints of eastern spice. On the palate, flavors of kirsch, plums, blackcurrant, and chocolate emerge, supported by velvety soft tannins. The wine offers considerable depth and fruit concentration, leading to a long, satisfying finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with grilled lamb, beef shawarma, and game dishes. It also complements mushroom-based dishes and aged cheeses, enhancing the savory and earthy flavors in the food.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its complexity, decant the wine for about an hour before serving. Serve at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F) to allow the aromas and flavors to express themselves fully.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2016 vintage is suitable for extended aging. Stored under proper conditions—consistent temperature, moderate humidity, and protection from light—the wine can develop further complexity over the next 10 to 15 years.
