Winery Background and History
Château Marsyas, established by the Saadé family in the early 2000s, is located in the southern part of Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. The estate spans 55 hectares at the foot of Mount Barouk, benefiting from a high-altitude terroir. The Saadé family’s vision combines ancient vineyard sites with contemporary techniques to produce wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region.
Producer and Winemaker
The winery is managed by brothers Karim and Sandro Saadé, who also oversee Domaine de Bargylus in Syria. They collaborate with renowned French oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, who brings expertise from Bordeaux to guide the viticulture and winemaking processes, ensuring that each vintage expresses the distinctiveness of the Bekaa Valley terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards are situated at an altitude of approximately 900 meters in the Bekaa Valley, providing a favorable microclimate with significant diurnal temperature variations. This elevation promotes the development of grapes with balanced acidity and complex flavors. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, offering excellent drainage and contributing to the mineral profile of the wines.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels for six months. This process allows the wine to develop complexity and integrate the oak characteristics harmoniously with the fruit profile.
Tasting Notes
The 2016 Château Marsyas Blanc presents a very vivid color with green reflections. The nose is fresh and floral, expressing white fruits such as peaches and pears. On the palate, the wine offers an elegant, round, and fresh attack with a touch of minerality. The finish is characterized by white fruits and a pleasant acidity, making it a complex and enjoyable white wine.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with grilled seabass, grilled prawns, shellfish, and salmon tartar. Its structure and acidity complement dishes rich in protein and umami, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) in white wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can help reveal its full spectrum of flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2016 vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully until at least 2026, developing additional tertiary aromas and flavors over time.
