Winery Background and History
Château Marsyas is a prominent Lebanese winery situated in the southern part of the Bekaa Valley. Established by the Saadé family, also known for Domaine de Bargylus in Syria, the estate embodies a commitment to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Lebanon. The winery integrates traditional practices with modern techniques, contributing to the renaissance of Lebanese winemaking.
Producer and Winemaker
The Saadé brothers, Karim and Sandro, oversee Château Marsyas, collaborating with renowned French oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt. Derenoncourt’s expertise in Bordeaux winemaking brings a refined approach to the vinification process, ensuring that each vintage expresses both the character of the grape varieties and the distinctiveness of the Bekaa Valley terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards of Château Marsyas are located at an altitude of approximately 900 meters in the Bekaa Valley. This elevation provides a favorable microclimate with significant diurnal temperature variations, promoting the development of grapes with balanced acidity and complex flavors. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, offering excellent drainage and contributing to the mineral profile of the wines.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels for 14 months. This process allows the wine to develop complexity and integrate the oak characteristics harmoniously with the fruit profile.
Tasting Notes
The 2016 Château Marsyas Rouge presents a deep ruby color with purple reflections. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of blackberries, blackcurrant, and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with rich flavors of dark fruits, licorice, and hints of vanilla. The finish is smooth and lingering, showcasing well-integrated tannins and a harmonious balance.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with grilled meats, hearty stews, and aged cheeses. Its robust structure and complex flavor profile complement dishes rich in protein and umami, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large red wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting for at least one hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full spectrum of flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2016 vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for up to 15 years, developing additional tertiary aromas and flavors over time.
