Winery Background and History
Château de la Font du Loup, meaning “Fountain of the Wolf,” is situated in the northern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The estate’s name originates from a natural spring on the property, historically frequented by wolves descending from Mont Ventoux. The Mélia family has been the custodians of this estate for four generations, emphasizing sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking practices. Their commitment to organic farming and respect for biodiversity has positioned them as a notable producer in the region.
Producer and Winemaker
Currently, the estate is managed by Anne-Charlotte Mélia Bachas, who brings a modern touch to the traditional practices of her ancestors. Under her guidance, the winery has embraced organic farming and has achieved HVE (High Environmental Value) Level 3 certification. Anne-Charlotte’s vision is to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of the estate while maintaining ecological balance. Her dedication ensures that each bottle embodies the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The “Le Puy Rolland” cuvée originates from a single plot located at the top of the Crau plateau, characterized by sandy soils dating back to the Pliocene era. This terroir, combined with the cooling Mistral winds and ample sunshine, provides ideal conditions for grape maturation. The vineyard is planted exclusively with centenarian Grenache vines, contributing to the wine’s depth and complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2021 vintage is crafted from 100% old vine Grenache, fully destemmed to enhance purity. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats, followed by aging for up to 18 months in a combination of vats, tanks, and foudres. This approach preserves the varietal’s freshness while adding subtle complexity.
Tasting Notes
The wine exhibits a vibrant bouquet of kirsch, orange blossom, dried flowers, and hints of sea breeze and dusty soil. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with beautiful concentration, ultra-fine tannins, and a seamless, silky texture. The finish is elegant and persistent, showcasing the finesse of old vine Grenache.
Food & Wine Pairing
This refined Grenache pairs excellently with game meats such as venison, as well as roasted red meats and hearty stews. Its aromatic profile complements dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme, and it also harmonizes with aged cheeses.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at approximately 13–15°C (55–59°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full character. Use medium-sized Burgundy-style glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent humidity—this wine can gracefully evolve over the next 15 to 20 years. Over time, it will develop richer tertiary notes, making it a rewarding choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
