Winery Background and History

Château d’Yquem, located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France, is renowned for producing some of the world’s most exceptional sweet wines. The estate’s history dates back to the 16th century, and it was classified as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the only Sauternes estate to receive this highest distinction. The unique microclimate of the region, influenced by the Garonne and Ciron rivers, fosters the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates the sugars and flavors in the grapes, resulting in the rich, complex profile characteristic of Château d’Yquem wines.

Producer and Winemaker

As of the 2010 vintage, Château d’Yquem was under the ownership of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, with Pierre Lurton serving as the estate’s managing director. The winemaking team is dedicated to maintaining the château’s legacy of excellence, employing meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking techniques to craft wines that reflect the unique terroir of Sauternes.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate’s vineyards cover approximately 126 hectares, with 100 hectares in active production at any given time. The soils are a combination of gravel and clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the complexity of the wines. The proximity to the Garonne and Ciron rivers creates morning mists followed by warm afternoons, ideal conditions for the development of noble rot. The 2010 vintage experienced favorable weather, allowing for optimal botrytization and the production of grapes with exceptional concentration and balance.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2010 Château d’Yquem is composed of approximately 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon provides richness and body, while Sauvignon Blanc adds freshness and aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes through the vineyard to select only those affected by noble rot. After gentle pressing, the must undergoes fermentation in new French oak barrels. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in these barrels for about 36 months, allowing it to develop complexity and integrate its flavors harmoniously.

Tasting Notes

The 2010 Château d’Yquem presents a pale to medium lemon-gold color. On the nose, it offers subtle scents of freshly sliced apricots, clementine, clear honey, and white flowers, with an underlying minerality. The palate is full-bodied, broad, and enveloping, perfectly balanced with controlled power and a deep, fleshy core of fruit enhanced by bright acids. Flavors of orange blossom, limestone, white peach, and honeysuckle lead to a finish with remarkable persistence.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Sauternes pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts such as tarte tatin or apricot tart. Its sweetness and acidity also complement spicy Asian cuisine, where the wine’s richness can balance the heat and enhance the flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and richness, serve the 2010 Château d’Yquem slightly chilled at around 10-12°C (50-54°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. Allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its aromas.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2010 Château d’Yquem is suitable for immediate enjoyment but also has the potential to age gracefully for several decades. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional complexity over time.
