Winery Background and History

Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug in Reims, Champagne Krug has established itself as a symbol of excellence and individuality in the Champagne world. The house is renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship, including the practice of fermenting wines in small oak casks and an extensive library of reserve wines. Krug’s philosophy centers on creating Champagnes that embody the fullest expression of pleasure, regardless of vintage variations. Now part of the LVMH group, Krug continues to uphold its legacy of producing exceptional Champagnes that are both complex and harmonious.

Producer and Winemaker

The 23ème Édition of Krug Rosé was crafted under the guidance of Cellar Master Eric Lebel, with Olivier Krug representing the sixth generation of the Krug family. Their collaborative approach ensures that each edition reflects the house’s commitment to quality and individuality. The blending process involves a selection of wines from multiple vintages, including reserve wines, to achieve the desired complexity and depth that characterize Krug Rosé.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Krug sources grapes from a diverse array of vineyards across the Champagne region, focusing on plots that offer distinctive characteristics. The 23ème Édition comprises a blend of wines from 60 different plots, with the youngest base wine from the 2011 harvest. The inclusion of 10% traditionally macerated Pinot Noir from Aÿ adds structure and color. The varied terroirs and microclimates contribute to the Champagne’s complexity and balance.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Each plot’s wine is fermented separately in small oak casks, a practice that allows for precise expression of terroir. The final blend includes 60 wines from multiple years, with reserve wines adding depth and consistency. After blending, the Champagne undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and is aged on lees for approximately seven years in Krug’s cellars. This extended aging period enhances the wine’s complexity and texture.

Tasting Notes

The Krug Rosé 23ème Édition presents a delicate pale pink hue. The nose reveals aromas of rose hips, cured ham, mulberries, redcurrant, peony, pepper, and pink grapefruit. On the palate, flavors of puff pastry and red-berry tart evolve into notes reminiscent of honey, citrus, and dried fruit. The Champagne is characterized by its creamy texture, impeccable balance of fruit and acidity, and a long, complex finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Krug Rosé 23ème Édition is highly versatile with food, pairing well with dishes like foie gras, lamb, venison, and bold options like anchovies or pigeon. Its structure and depth allow it to complement a wide range of flavors, making it suitable for various culinary experiences.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve this Champagne chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a white wine glass or a tulip-shaped Champagne flute to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its expressive qualities. This Champagne is best enjoyed in its youth to capture its vibrant freshness, but it also has the potential to evolve with additional bottle age.

Storage and Aging Potential

When stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—this Champagne can continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5 to 10 years. Over time, it is expected to develop richer, more nuanced flavors, including notes of honey and toasted nuts, while retaining its underlying freshness and elegance.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

Approximately 45% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 25% Meunier, including 10% traditionally macerated Pinot Noir.
