Winery Background and History

Founded in 1838 in Aÿ, Champagne Deutz is one of the region’s historic houses. Acquired by the Rouzaud family in 1983, owners of Louis Roederer, Deutz has maintained its reputation for producing elegant and refined Champagnes. The house emphasizes traditional methods, sourcing grapes from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, and is known for its meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard management and winemaking.

Producer and Winemaker

Michel Davesne, the Chef de Cave since 2003, oversees the production at Champagne Deutz. With a philosophy centered on precision and purity, Davesne crafts wines that reflect the unique terroir of Champagne. His approach combines traditional techniques with modern innovations to produce wines of exceptional balance and complexity.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for Amour de Deutz Rosé 2009 are sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Verzenay for Pinot Noir, and from Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly, and Villers-Marmery for Chardonnay. These vineyards benefit from chalky soils and a cool climate, contributing to the wine’s minerality and freshness. The 2009 vintage experienced a warm growing season, resulting in ripe and concentrated grapes.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The wine is produced using the traditional méthode champenoise. A blend of 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay, it includes 6% still Pinot Noir wine from old vines in Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, imparting its distinctive rosé hue. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging on lees for approximately 8 years, enhancing its complexity and texture. The dosage is 8 g/L, balancing richness and acidity.

Tasting Notes

Amour de Deutz Rosé 2009 displays a delicate salmon-pink color with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose offers aromas of wild strawberries, raspberries, rose petals, and subtle notes of brioche and almond. On the palate, it is elegant and fresh, featuring flavors of red berries, cherry, and citrus zest, complemented by a creamy texture and bright acidity. The finish is long and refined, with hints of spice and minerality.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Champagne pairs beautifully with grilled salmon or tuna, roasted duck with berry sauces, lobster or crayfish, sushi and sashimi, and berry desserts or light fruit tarts. Its versatility makes it suitable for both savory and sweet dishes, enhancing the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a white wine glass or wide Champagne flute to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture. No decanting is necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its expressive qualities.

Storage and Aging Potential

When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with stable humidity—Amour de Deutz Rosé 2009 can age gracefully for 10 to 15 years. Over time, it will develop more complex tertiary aromas, such as honeyed notes and a richer mouthfeel, adding depth to its fresh fruit character.
