Distillery Background and History
Bruichladdich was established in 1881 on the Rhinns of Islay and was revitalized beginning in 2000 with a focus on terroir-driven, transparent whisky production. The Port Charlotte line showcases heavily peated expressions that honor Islay’s smoky heritage, while embracing innovation and provenance.
Master Distiller and Production Philosophy
Under the leadership of Jim McEwan (former Master Distiller) and the current team, Bruichladdich champions integrity in sourcing and production—eschewing chill filtration and artificial coloring, and highlighting barley origin and cask influence in each bottling.
Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)
This expression uses locally grown Islay barley sourced from farms within 10 miles of the distillery. The heavily peated barley (~40 ppm) is paired with Islay water, ensuring a terroir-focused spirit with natural yeast fermentation.
Distillation Process
Distillation takes place in tall, narrow-necked copper pot stills, retaining aromatic purity and tradition. The spirit is bottled un-chill-filtered and without added coloring.
Maturation & Cask Information
Aged for 9 years in a complex combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks—including first- and second-fill barrels—before being finished in premium French Sauternes wine casks, adding layered sweetness to the smoky base.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Warm peach cobbler, honey, syrup, soft driftwood smoke, vanilla, with a gentle, integrated peat presence.
Palate: Light peat smoke, dried honeybread, melon and bramble jam, grilled seafood notes, with juicy tropical fruit balanced by earthy peat.
Finish: Smoky warmth with oak spice, lingering sweetness, and a smooth peel of citrus.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pairs beautifully with seafood—especially grilled oysters or scallops—smoked meats, charcuterie, and aged cheeses, where the peat and Sauternes nuance provide a sophisticated contrast.
Serving Suggestions and Ideal Glassware
Best served neat or with a small addition of water to open aromatics; serve at 18–20 °C in a Glencairn glass to fully appreciate its layered profile.
Storage and Aging Potential
With proper storage (cool, upright, away from light), the whisky remains stable. While additional aging may integrate flavors subtly, the core complexity is achieved during the 9-year maturation.
