Winery Background and History
Bodegas CARO is a joint venture between two renowned wine families: Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) from Bordeaux and the Catena family from Mendoza. Established in 1999, the collaboration aims to combine French winemaking expertise with Argentina’s exceptional terroir. The name “Aruma” means “night” in the language of the Quechua, the native people of the Mendoza region, reflecting the intense darkness of the nights in the Andes and the pure mountain air that give the wines their rich, authentic character.
Producer and Winemaker
Aruma is produced under the guidance of Philippe Rolet, the winemaker at Bodegas CARO. Rolet brings a wealth of experience from his work in both France and Argentina, focusing on creating wines that express the purity and elegance of the Malbec grape. His approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the varietal and terroir to shine through.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for Aruma Malbec 2022 are sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. This region is characterized by its arid climate, exceptional sun exposure, and significant temperature variations between day and night. These conditions contribute to the development of grapes with concentrated flavors, balanced acidity, and ripe tannins.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were hand-harvested, carefully selected, destemmed, and crushed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The winemaking process included traditional techniques such as pump-over and delestage, with total maceration lasting 12 to 15 days. Aruma is aged exclusively in tanks to preserve its fruit-driven style and allow the varietal character of Malbec to come through.
Tasting Notes
Aruma Malbec 2022 exhibits an intense deep ruby color. The nose is very fruity, with pure aromas of berry fruits, violets, and notes of blackcurrant. On the palate, the wine is round, fresh, and well-balanced, displaying generous flavors of blackberry and red fruits. The finish is long and delicate, highlighting the wine’s elegance and purity.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Malbec pairs excellently with grilled red meats, lamb, and game. Its robust structure and fruit-forward profile also complement aged cheeses and rich stews. For a vegetarian option, consider pairing it with mushroom-based dishes or lentil casseroles.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its complexity, serve Aruma Malbec 2022 at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for at least 30 minutes before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic potential. Use a Bordeaux-style glass to concentrate its aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Aruma Malbec 2022 is suitable for aging and can be cellared for up to 5 years under proper conditions. Store the wine horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and humidity to allow it to develop additional complexity over time.
