Winery Background and History
Amancaya is a collaborative creation between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Argentina’s Catena family, established in 1999. The partnership aims to blend Bordeaux winemaking expertise with Argentina’s rich viticultural heritage. Named after a native Andean flower, Amancaya represents the fusion of French elegance and Argentine terroir, producing wines that reflect both traditions.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Bodegas CARO is led by Philippe Rolet, who brings extensive experience from both Old and New World wine regions. Rolet emphasizes minimal intervention in the cellar to allow the true expression of the vineyard’s terroir. Under his guidance, the estate focuses on producing wines that are balanced, elegant, and reflective of their origin.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Grapes for Amancaya 2021 are sourced from select plots in Luján de Cuyo and Altamira in Mendoza, Argentina. Luján de Cuyo features varied soils, including alluvial layers of loam, rock, and gravel, while Altamira’s vineyards are planted at elevations around 1,000 meters above sea level on ancient alluvial beds. The 2021 growing season experienced cooler temperatures and intermittent rainfall, leading to a delayed but balanced ripening period.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Hand-harvested grapes undergo careful sorting and destemming before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Regular pump-overs ensure gentle tannin extraction. Post-malolactic fermentation, 50% of the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, while the remaining 50% matures in concrete vats, preserving fruit purity and adding complexity.
Tasting Notes
Amancaya 2021 presents a deep velvety red color with intense ruby hues. The nose is vibrant, offering aromas of red fruits, strawberries, and blackcurrants, complemented by floral and minty notes. On the palate, it is balanced and pleasant, with refined tannins and generous flavors of red berries, leading to an elegant and long aftertaste.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with hearty dishes such as grilled red meats, lamb, and game. Its robust structure and complex flavors also complement aged cheeses and rich stews. For a vegetarian option, consider pairing it with mushroom-based dishes or lentil casseroles.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its complexity, serve Amancaya 2021 at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for at least 1 hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic potential. Use a Bordeaux-style glass to concentrate its aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Amancaya 2021 is suitable for aging and can be cellared for up to 10 years under proper conditions. Store the wine horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and humidity to allow it to develop additional complexity over time.
